THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA (UGA) College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Public Health have been engaged in TB research for the past two decades. The Animal Health Research Center has >75,000 sq ft facilities with extensive BSL3 and ABSL3 space for animal research. Dr. Fred Quinn (Co-Director, Basic Science Core) is the Chair of the Department of Infectious Diseases where faculty work on a wide variety of small (e.g., mice, guinea pig, ferrets) and large (e.g., cows) animals infection models. Dr. Chris Whalen (Co-Director, Clinical Sciences Core) oversees a research program examining TB/HIV co-infection and TB transmission, based in the Global Health Institute. Dr. Whalen has had a study site in Uganda for more than 20 years.

THE GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (GEORGIA TECH) is one of the nation’s leading institutes of science and engineering that is recognized for its innovative, cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research. Located just 5 miles away, Emory and Georgia Tech have jointly created the Georgia Tech/Emory Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. Faculty participating in the TRAC are engaged in research related to immunoengineering and nanotherapeutics, computational and systems biology, and vaccine delivery, nanomedicine and diagnostics.

GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY (GEORGIA STATE) is a large, public research institution, with a diverse student population, 5 miles away from Emory. The Institute for Biomedical Sciences promotes interdisciplinary research focused on understanding the mechanistic basis for human diseases, such as inflammatory, immunologic, and infectious diseases, including TB.

The mission of the Emory TB Center is to help achieve a world free from tuberculosis (TB) by enhancing TB-related basic biomedical, epidemiological, clinical, translational, and public health research, service and practice. To accomplish this mission, the Emory TB Center maintains a number of established partnerships with local departments of health, the metro-Atlanta community, other institutions in the state of Georgia, as well as other national and international partners in India, Brazil, South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia and Georgia. The Center seeks to facilitate a collaborative environment for successful funding applications, give students and postdoctoral trainees exposure to interdisciplinary and practicum opportunities, engage with professionals in clinical and public health practice, and raise public awareness of TB, and related comorbidities, as a major global health problem in need of attention.
